Acne
Acne results when small glands below the skin's surface, the sebaceous glands, become clogged with sebum, an oily substance whose normal collection and excretion keeps skin healthy. If they become clogged, bacteria can grow in the glands, which in turn causes swelling and pimples on the skin's surface. This can occur anywhere on the epidermis where there are hair follicles below the surface (oil glands attach to these follicles), including the face, back, and neck. Acne affects both adults and adolescents, but it tends to be more common during times of high hormonal activity such as adolescence.

Acne begins when the pores in the skin become clogged and can no longer drain sebum (an oil produced by the sebaceous glands that protects and moisturizes the skin). Sebum buildup causes the surrounding hair follicle to swell. Clogged pores form blackheads and whiteheads, pimples, and deeper lumps (cysts or nodules).
